So what? That sh!t means nothing.
I know that I'm not going to make a lot of friends this morning, blasting Florida for their victory last night. And it's not that I don't think they did a good job... They definitely had their ducks in a row, and their ducks were much quackier than Ohio State's ducks, who were definitely not in any kind of recognizable row. But that doesn't mean that the Gators deserved to be in the Big Game, and it certainly doesn't mean that the BCS couldn't use a makeover.
Sure, I am probably still remotely bitter about Michigan not making the grade, and I was mostly unimpressed by their showing at the Rose Bowl on New Years Day. (Not a great way to start the year and end the season, boys.) And I'm not going to start an argument about how they deserved to be ranked #2 in the nation when most teams had finished their seasons. It's an argument I would lose, given our 20/20 hindsight and the fact that we played a dismal Rose Bowl.
But I would still argue that staggering the ends of different divisions' seasons and allowing some teams to coordinate a playoff-style game makes the rankings arbitrary, unfair, and generally corrupt. I cannot make sense of a "championship series" that leaves the country's only undefeated team out of the running for the big title. How can a team without a donut in the loss column be considered the national champion? It doesn't make sense.
I've already complained about Urban Meyer's complaining ... and now we know that the squeaky wheel in college football will get the invitation to the game. But is that how our rivalries should be determined? Does the crybaby really get his way? Apparently so, deservedly or not.
What I find frustrating now is the banter ... I understand celebrating and wanting to flaunt the new National Title t-shirts and hats that are selling like ice on a July Miami day, but the rest of the yammering is really very annoying. I mean, if Florida is so proud of the teams they beat this season, teams that they claim are better than Ohio State, then why was OSU ranked #1 from August until the morning of January 8? Why wasn't Florida ranked #2 in the nation BEFORE the giant UCLA upset, when the country's real #2 team was idle? And if they are that good, then why did Florida barely pull off a win against a struggling Florida State team AND lose to #11 Auburn in the middle of the season? It sure makes it easy now that the game is over, doesn't it?
Ohio State hadn't played a game in something like 51 days before last night's BCS title game. Florida played an additional 2 Saturdays after the Ohio State-Michigan game marked the end of the Big Ten season. I wouldn't suggest that the long pause is the reason that OSU didn't show up with guns blazing last night, but if you took 2 months off from something you did every day, I'd think you might be a little sluggish too. Not to mention that Florida had something extra to prove last night ... The debate began the morning after the new rankings were published and Gator fans realized that they'd be in the Big Dance. Urban Meyer knew that he would have to prove his right to be there -- he did whine his way into the number 2 spot, after all, and I'm sure he didn't want to initiate another debate about his team's place in the BCS. And they won. Good for them. But I still don't see it as vindication.
I still think that all divisions should have seasons that coincide. I firmly believe that a playoff structure should be established to honestly determine which teams are the best at the time they're playing the game, since anyone can have a good game. Why should college football be the only holdout? Obviously the strategy works. And there is *some* movement heading in that direction ... but there will always be a party pooper.
I'm guessing that Urban knows a little something about that.

The problem with your argument is that someone DID beat Florida this season ... and NOBODY could beat Ohio State. Not when all teams were active on the field and were trying their damnedest to be the best. Florida couldn't do it, though -- and they lost to a team ranked 11 mid-season! That, my friend, doesn't make for a champion.
And the only way to know which team truly is the best is to have a playoff series. Let the teams claw and scratch their ways to the top of the pile honestly, not with tears and whines and "we don't have enough money" bullsh!t. Let the true champions, the undefeateds, show that they deserve to be called Champion, instead of backpedaling into position. Florida has already shown that they can be beaten ... I wish we could watch Boise State prove it.
Maybe you ARE cute, but you're not getting away with this.......Do you mean to tell me that despite the Natl Championship game, you still believe Ohio State was the better team, or is your argument primarily that the current BCS system sucks? If the latter is your beef, I couldn't agree more.
I'm not saying that Ohio State was the better team on January 8th ... I'm saying that they had been a stellar team all season, and that they didn't exactly show up for the big game. AND I'm saying that BCS system needs a serious makeover.
Isn't there a TV program for that?
